Antique Holomus & Pakemus

Before the missionaries arrived in the early 1820's the Hawaiian people were very comfortable wearing very little, a grass or tapa cloth skirt at most. As more and more visitors began to arrive they were instantly struck by the beautiful and leisurely tropical prints and colorful designs of the Hawaiian Islands.

Over the years designers of Aloha fashion have created many wonderful dress designs like the Pake-muu, with its long pointed sleeves and the elegant evening wear like the Holomu with its ruffled collar and the Holoku, the famous full length dress of the fifties.

Many fabrics that were slated for
Hawaiian fashion production in the
1930's and 40's were printed in
Japan prior to World war II.
